Abstract

Based on archival materials, the article analyzes the circumstances related to the liquidation of the Far Eastern Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1939. The author connects the closure of the Branch with the test of loyalty to the Soviet authorities of its Chairman and President of the USSR Academy of Sciences Academician V.L. Komarov, who took this desperate step in order to preserve the viability of the USSR Academy of Sciences, created with his direct participation, as the largest scientific organization in the world. Having retained the post of President of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1939, V.L. Komarov focused his activities on the further development of the Academy of Sciences, which ultimately determined its outstanding role in ensuring the technological superiority of the USSR over Nazi Germany during the Great Patriotic War.
